South Africa Pretoria

GAiN SA is located in the capital city of South Africa, Pretoria. The staff of GAiN SA supports a number of projects in a radius of ca. 80 kilometers around Pretoria. Out of the Netherlands we made a Pilot trip to the Pretoria area in October 2018 and this upcoming trip is the next step in a commitment to the project and to the people (‘we will be back!’). We are really of added value to the people, our contribution and commitment is very welcome and we can also encourage our South African colleagues and support them in their work.

South Africa – Pretoria

GAiN SA is located in the capital city of South Africa, Pretoria. The staff of GAiN SA supports a number of projects in a radius of ca. 80 kilometers around Pretoria. Out of the Netherlands we made a Pilot trip to the Pretoria area in October 2018 and this upcoming trip is the next step in a commitment to the project and to the people (‘we will be back!’). We are really of added value to the people, our contribution and commitment is very welcome and we can also encourage our South African colleagues and support them in their work.

Brakpan/Springs

East of Johannesburg we will visit, the “Call her Blessed” Shelter for young women who are pregnant or women who have been exposed to domestic violence. In a safe environment these women and their children are taken care of, given love and learned some basic skills, such as how to apply for a job and, more importantly, how to behave so that you keep that job too.
There is a lot of deferred maintenance at the house, and we can help the women and children with their daily routine, assisting in the training center and possibly also going into the informal settlements, where many of these women come from.

Pretoria (Tshwane)

A number of years ago several city names in South Africa have undergone a change of name. For example, the formerly named Pretoria is now known as Tshwane which means 'we are the same'. It is the administrative capital of South Africa. The city is located in a warm sheltered and fertile valley surrounded by hills.
In the center of Pretoria a homeless shelter is supported. There is also a project to approach and support people on the streets with food and other necessities.

Mooiplaats.

Besides one of the municipal landfills of Pretoria lies an informal settlement, Mooiplaats. In this slum, more than 16,000 people live without basic facilities such as running water and electricity.
We will work at two crèches, “SMILE” and “Ditshego”. Activities with the children, maintenance of the buildings and work in the garden.
In cooperation with our contacts we want to try to organize a holiday Bible week in this slum, possibly combined with a sporting activity.

Soshanguve Socks, Winterveld (ca. 80 km to the North East of Pretoria)

Soshanguve is a very large township north of Pretoria, where people of different origins are placed together. The name is a contraction of a number of important tribal languages spoken in South Africa (SOtho, SHAngaa, NGUni and VEnda), and draws the multi-ethnicity of this country. Many people in Soshanguve do not speak English.
In Soshanguve we will visit (AIDS) orphans and caretakers, encourage them, pray with and for them and support them with food packages. A sponsorship program has been set up for these children, and we can learn more about it.
In Winterveld is the “Motivation for Live” crèche, which is supported with food and materials. The premises needs to be isolated, help is needed with the small-scale garden project and the crèche and the families are supported with clothing, food and various materials. There are plans to buy the neighboring terrain and extend the crèche, if that becomes serious, we may also be able to do something about this during this trip.
Outside these projects there are even more contacts and possibilities. Together with our GAiN colleagues in South Africa we will fill in the program, where we want to include various activities, but also have time to relax. A visit to a small Nature Reserve with ostriches, rhinos, zebras and other African animals is of course also part of the trip, as well as visiting a local church.

Project money

In many of the projects where GAiN SA is involved there is a shortage of pretty much everything: insufficient food, learning resources, toys, paints, brushes, clothes and shoes is very common. That is why we want to bring extra project funding and ask the participants to get involved, through actions, sponsorship, etc. This is not an obligation but a challenge!

Extension possible

In addition to the 14-day-long project trip there is the possibility to extend your trip. The return ticket can therefore be planned on a different date in consultation with the travel department.
